Good to know

  • More formal than ficar. You'll hear permanecer in announcements, on signs and in the news: Permaneça na linha. (Stay on the line.) With friends, use ficar: Fica aqui comigo. (Stay here with me.)
  • With an adjective, it says that a state continues: A loja permanece fechada. (The store remains closed.)
  • Spelling: c becomes ç before o and a: eu permaneço, que ela permaneça.
