Good to know

  • Spelling: g becomes gu before e to keep the hard "g" sound: eu neguei, que ele negue.
  • Two uses: negar que is to deny that something is true; negar something a someone is to refuse it: O banco negou o empréstimo. (The bank refused the loan.)
  • Negar-se a + infinitive means "to refuse to": Ele se negou a responder. (He refused to answer.)
  • Invitations: to turn down an invitation or an offer, recusar is the more usual verb: Ela recusou o convite. (She turned down the invitation.)
