Good to know

  • No preposition: English says "listen to", but escutar goes straight to the thing: Eu escuto música. (I listen to music.)
  • Escutar or ouvir? Strictly, ouvir is to hear and escutar is to listen, to pay attention. In everyday speech Brazilians use them almost interchangeably: ouvir música is just as common as escutar música.
  • Escuta! is a casual way to get someone's attention: Escuta, você pode me ajudar? (Listen, can you help me?)
