- Ideas, not butter. Difundir is for news, ideas, culture and knowledge. For butter on bread, say passar: passar manteiga no pão (to spread butter on bread).
- Everyday choices: people say espalhar for rumors and divulgar for making something known: espalhar um boato (to spread a rumor), divulgar um evento (to publicize an event).
- Difundido means "widespread": Essa é uma ideia muito difundida. (That's a very widespread idea.) The noun is difusão.
