Good to know

  • Downloading: baixar um aplicativo (to download an app), baixar um arquivo (to download a file). Brazilians also say fazer o download.
  • Lowering: you can lower something (baixar o preço, baixar o volume, baixar a voz), or something can go down by itself: A febre baixou. (The fever went down.)
  • Baixar or abaixar? For turning down the volume, both are common: Abaixa o som! For bending down or lowering a part of your body, use abaixar: abaixar a cabeça.
  • It comes from baixo (low). The x sounds like "sh": "by-SHAH".
