Good to know

  • Two uses: to reach a goal, a level or an age: atingir uma meta (to reach a goal). And to hit or affect: A chuva atingiu a cidade. (The rain hit the city.)
  • No preposition: what you reach or hit comes right after the verb: A bola atingiu o carro. (The ball hit the car.)
  • Spelling: g becomes j before o and a: atinjo, atinja.
  • Alcançar is a close synonym when you talk about goals: alcançar um objetivo (to achieve an objective).
