Course › Week 13: Final week

Day 90 · Test of 90 · about 60 minutes

This is the final test. It covers all 90 days:

  • Reading and understanding a story told at natural speed
  • The present, both pasts, the future and the conditional
  • The three subjunctives, "if" sentences and reported speech
  • Natural, connected Portuguese: the personal infinitive, the passive, connectors
  • 80% right on the first try is a pass. No notes, no looking back: answer from memory.

Friday morning, the last day of Emma's three-month contract. She has an answer to give. Read how the story ends, and then show what you can do.

Part 1: The end of the story

Listen to the whole story before you read it. Then answer the questions.

Friday, nine o’clock in the morning. Emma arrived early at the agency and knocked on the door of Carol’s office.

Carol Pode entrar, Emma. Senta. Você dormiu bem? Come in, Emma. Sit down. Did you sleep well?

Emma Quase nada. Hardly at all. I stayed up late writing a letter to my parents.

Carol Imagino. I can imagine. Look, before you say anything, I want you to know that I’ll understand your decision, whatever it is.

Emma Obrigada, Carol. Thank you, Carol. When I arrived, I thought three months would be more than enough.

Carol E não foram? And they weren’t?

No. If someone had told me I was going to want to stay, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Carol Então… So…

Emma Então eu aceito. Eu quero ficar no Brasil. So I accept. I want to stay in Brazil.

What good news! I’m very happy that you’re staying with us.

I have just one request. I’d like to spend two weeks in Toronto before I start, to see my family.

Carol Claro. Of course. The contract is ready to be signed today. Then go, rest and enjoy your family.

Emma left the office and found Lucas, who, for the first time in his life, had arrived before nine.

Lucas E aí? O que você decidiu? Fala logo! So? What did you decide? Tell me!

Emma Eu vou ficar, Lucas. I’m staying, Lucas.

Lucas Eu sabia! Gente, ela vai ficar! Hoje o café é por minha conta. I knew it! Everyone, she’s staying! Today the coffee is on me.

That night, Emma called her parents. They were a little sad, but they promised to visit her in December.

Three months earlier, she had arrived hardly able to say a thing. Now, Brazil was her home too.

What next

Parabéns! Ninety days ago you learned to say bom dia. Today you read the end of a story, wrote full sentences from memory and used the subjunctive without a table in front of you. That is a solid intermediate level (B1): you can live, work and make friends in Portuguese, as Emma is about to.

If you scored under 80%, that's information, not a verdict. See which part cost you the most points and go back to the review day for it: day 85 for the present, day 86 for the pasts, day 87 for the subjunctive and "if", day 88 for connected Portuguese. Then take this test again in a week.

A language stays alive only if you use it. Here is how to keep yours growing:

  • Keep your review list empty. Every item you got wrong during the course is waiting in My review. Clear it, and come back to it once a week.
  • Grow your vocabulary. Finish the intermediate flashcards, then start the advanced deck: idioms, slang, and the words of work, news and culture.
  • Keep your verbs sharp. The verb guides cover the 100 verbs you'll need most, each with every tense, examples and exercises. Take one verb a day.
  • Use real Portuguese every day. A Brazilian series, a podcast, music with the lyrics in front of you, a few pages of a book, a conversation with a Brazilian friend. Fifteen minutes a day is worth more than two hours on a Sunday.
  • Come back to the story. Any day on the course map can be done again. The dialogues from the first weeks make good fast listening practice now.

An advanced course is on its way, for the step from B1 to real fluency. Until then: boa sorte, e até logo!

Your result

Answer everything above first. 80% right on the first try means you’re ready to move on. Below that, go back over the days that gave you trouble, then try again.
