How to listen
- Answer out loud. You hear a sentence in English, then a pause. Say it in Portuguese before the voice does, then repeat the Portuguese you hear.
- Listen first, read second. The transcript shows each line only as it’s spoken, so you can’t peek at an answer. Try a lesson with your eyes closed too.
- One lesson a day. If you answered about 8 times out of 10, go on to the next lesson tomorrow. If not, listen to this one again.
The story
It’s Saturday morning, and there’s no school. Ana, Paulo and Pedro walk to the street market, where Marcos sells fruit. The mangoes are sweet, the price is high, and Ana knows how to bargain. This is the conversation you’ll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
Ana Hoje é sábado. Vamos para a feira! Today is Saturday. Let’s go to the market!
Marcos Bom dia! A manga está muito doce hoje. Você quer provar? Good morning! The mangoes are very sweet today. Do you want to try one?
Pedro Quero! Que delícia! I do! How delicious!
Ana Quanto é o quilo? How much is a kilo?
Marcos São dez reais o quilo. It’s ten reals a kilo.
Ana Está caro! That’s expensive!
Marcos Para você, sete reais. For you, seven reals.
Ana Está bom. Quero dois quilos de manga e um quilo de banana. All right. I want two kilos of mangoes and a kilo of bananas.
Marcos Mais alguma coisa? Anything else?
Ana Só isso, obrigada. That’s all, thank you.
Pedro Mãe, quero mais manga! Mom, I want more mango!
