Good to know

  • Infringir or infligir? They look alike but aren't the same. Infringir is to break a law or a rule. Infligir is to inflict something on someone: infligir uma derrota (to inflict a defeat).
  • Spelling: the g becomes j before o and a: eu infrinjo, que ele infrinja.
  • Infração is the noun: uma infração de trânsito (a traffic violation).
  • Formal word. In everyday speech, people say desrespeitar or quebrar: quebrar as regras (to break the rules).
