Good to know

  • Vestir or usar? Both can mean "to wear". Usar is the everyday word for what you usually wear, including glasses and jewelry. Vestir is more about putting clothes on: Ela usa óculos. (She wears glasses.) Vou vestir o casaco. (I'm going to put on my coat.)
  • Se vestir means "to get dressed": Vou me vestir e já volto. (I'll get dressed and be right back.)
  • Sizes: Que tamanho você veste? (What size do you wear?) For shoes, Brazilians use calçar: Eu calço 40. (I wear a size 40 shoe.)
  • Vestir a camisa, literally "to put on the jersey", means to be fully committed to a team, a company or a cause: Ele veste a camisa da empresa. (He's fully committed to the company.)
