Good to know

  • Olhar para is "to look at": Por que você está olhando para mim? (Why are you looking at me?) Without para, olhar often means "to check" or "to keep an eye on": olhar o celular (to check your phone), olhar as crianças (to watch the kids).
  • Olhar, ver or assistir? Olhar is to look and ver is to see. For TV, movies and games, use ver or assistir: Vamos ver um filme? (Shall we watch a movie?)
  • Dar uma olhada means "to take a look": Vou dar uma olhada. (I'll take a look.)
  • Olha, at the start of a sentence works like "Look," or "Listen,": Olha, eu não sei. (Look, I don't know.)
