Good to know

  • Leem has no accent. Under the 1990 spelling reform, which Brazil started using in 2009, leem (they read) lost its circumflex; it used to be lêem. The same goes for veem (they see) and deem (that they give): Eles leem muito. (They read a lot.)
  • Ler em voz alta means "to read aloud": Você pode ler em voz alta? (Can you read it out loud?)
  • Only two tenses are irregular: the present (leio, lê, leem) and the present subjunctive (leia, leiam). The past is regular: li, leu, leram.
