Good to know

  • Estar or ser? Estar is for states that can change: feelings, health, the weather, and where people and things are. Compare O João é calmo. (João is a calm person.) and O João está calmo. (João is calm right now.)
  • Estar + -ndo describes what's happening right now: Estou trabalhando. (I'm working.) Está chovendo. (It's raining.)
  • Estar com + a noun is how Brazilians say how they feel: Estou com fome. (I'm hungry.) Also estar com sede (thirsty), frio (cold), sono (sleepy) and pressa (in a hurry).
  • Tô and tá: in speech, estou becomes tô and está becomes tá: Tô cansado. (I'm tired.) Tá bom! (OK!)
