Emma Lucas, cadê você? Você ficou de chegar às duas! Lucas, where are you? You said you’d be here at two!

Lucas Calma, acabei de sair do restaurante. Passei lá para pegar os salgadinhos e acabei ficando meia hora conversando com o Rafa. Relax, I’ve just left the restaurant. I stopped by to pick up the snacks and ended up spending half an hour chatting with Rafa.

Emma Ai, eu fico nervosa! Será que vai dar tempo? Oh, I get so nervous! Do you think there’ll be enough time?

Emma Traz gelo, por favor, que o gelo acabou. E não deixa de trazer o violão! Bring ice, please, because we’re out of ice. And be sure to bring your guitar!

Emma Acho que não. Mas ela anda fazendo muitas perguntas. Ontem quis saber por que eu continuo limpando a casa. I don’t think so. But she’s been asking a lot of questions lately. Yesterday she wanted to know why I keep cleaning the apartment.

Lucas E o que você disse? And what did you say?

Emma Que me deu vontade de fazer uma faxina. Ela não acreditou muito… That I felt like giving the place a good cleaning. She didn’t quite believe it…

Lucas Deixa pra lá. Daqui a pouco ela vai entender tudo. Never mind. In a little while she’ll understand everything.

Emma Espera, o Seu Zé me mandou uma mensagem… Lucas, a Dona Marta quer voltar do mercado agora! Wait, Seu Zé just sent me a message… Lucas, Dona Marta wants to come back from the market now!

Lucas Pede para ele dar um jeito! Eles podem passar pela farmácia, pela padaria, pela feira… Ask him to find a way! They can go by the pharmacy, the bakery, the street market…

Ficar: get, stay, keep, find out

English spreads these ideas over get, become, stay, keep and be. Brazilian Portuguese gives nearly all of them to ficar. You know two of its jobs already: where something is located (day 18) and staying somewhere. Here is the rest of the family.

Pattern Meaning Portuguese English
ficar + adjective to get, to become Eu fico nervosa antes de uma festa. I get nervous before a party.
ficar em + place to stay Vou ficar em casa hoje. I'm going to stay home today.
ficar + place to be located O restaurante fica na Vila Madalena. The restaurant is in Vila Madalena.
ficar com to keep, to take Pode ficar com o troco. You can keep the change.
ficar sabendo to find out, to hear Fiquei sabendo que você vai viajar. I heard that you're going to travel.
ficar de + infinitive to say you'll do it Ele ficou de me ligar. He said he'd call me.
ficar + gerund to keep doing, to spend time doing Ela ficou esperando duas horas. She waited around for two hours.

Ficar + adjective is the one you'll use most. Wherever English says "get" or "become" plus a feeling or a state, reach for ficar: ficar feliz, ficar triste, ficar doente, ficar pronto, ficar rico, ficar com fome, ficar com raiva.

  • A Dona Marta vai ficar muito feliz. Dona Marta is going to be so happy.
  • O jantar ficou pronto às oito. Dinner was ready at eight.
  • Fiquei com fome depois da aula. I got hungry after class.

Compare it with estar, which describes the state without the change: Eu estava nervosa. I was nervous. Eu fiquei nervosa. I got nervous.

Ficar de is a relaxed promise or arrangement. It's very often followed by "but": Você ficou de trazer o gelo, mas esqueceu. You said you'd bring the ice, but you forgot.

In a store, ficar com is how you say which one you're taking: Vou ficar com a azul. I'll take the blue one.

Dar: work out, be possible, be enough

Dar means "to give", and it also runs a set of expressions about whether things are possible. In most of them there's no real subject, so the verb stays in the ele form: dá, deu, vai dar.

Portuguese English
dar certo to work out, to go well
dar errado to go wrong
dar para to be possible, to be able to (+ infinitive)
dar tempo to have enough time (de + infinitive: to do something)
dar um jeito to find a way, to sort it out
dar vontade to feel like, to get the urge (de + infinitive: to do something)
  • Vai dar tudo certo. Everything will work out.
  • O plano deu errado. The plan went wrong.
  • Dá para ir a pé? Can you walk there? · Não deu para ir à festa. I couldn't make it to the party.
  • Não vai dar tempo de almoçar. There won't be time to have lunch.
  • Não se preocupe, eu dou um jeito. Don't worry, I'll find a way.
  • Me deu vontade de comer brigadeiro. I got a craving for brigadeiro.

Dar para has been with you since day 22 (Dá para…?). Now you can use it in any tense. Brazilians use it far more than é possível, and often instead of conseguir. On its own, Não dá. means "It's not possible" or "I can't".

With dar vontade, the person who feels the urge is shown by me, te or nos before the verb: Me deu vontade de rir. I felt like laughing. Não te dá vontade de viajar? Don't you feel like traveling?

Dar um jeito is a very Brazilian idea: there is always some way to solve it, even if it isn't the official one. You'll hear A gente dá um jeito. whenever a plan hits a problem. Day 82 comes back to its famous relative, o jeitinho.

Acabar and deixar

Acabar on its own is "to end", "to finish" or "to run out": O filme acabou. O gelo acabou. What follows it changes the meaning completely.

Pattern English
acabar de + infinitive to have just done
acabar + gerund to end up doing
acabar com to put an end to, to finish off, to ruin
  • Acabei de chegar. I've just arrived.
  • Acabei chegando tarde. I ended up arriving late.
  • As crianças acabaram com o bolo. The children finished off the cake.
  • A chuva acabou com a festa. The rain ruined the party.

Only a de separates "just" from "ended up", so listen for it: acabei de ficar (I've just stayed) and acabei ficando (I ended up staying).

Deixar covers "to leave" and "to let", and with de it means "to stop".

Pattern English
deixar + thing or person to leave (behind, somewhere)
deixar + person + infinitive to let someone do something
deixar de + infinitive to stop doing, to give up
não deixar de + infinitive to be sure to, not to miss
Deixa comigo. Leave it to me.
Deixa pra lá. Never mind. / Forget it.
  • Deixei as chaves em casa. I left the keys at home.
  • Deixa eu ver. Let me see. · A Carol deixou a gente sair mais cedo. Carol let us leave early.
  • Ele deixou de comer carne. He stopped eating meat.
  • Não deixe de provar a coxinha. Be sure to try the coxinha.

Deixa eu ver is what everyone says. In careful writing it's Deixe-me ver. And remember that "to leave" a place is sair, not deixar: Saí de casa às oito.

Levar or trazer? And andar, continuar, passar

English is loose with bring and take. Portuguese isn't: it depends on where the speaker is.

  • trazer: toward the place where I am now. Traz gelo, por favor! (Emma is at home, and the ice is coming to her.)
  • levar: to anywhere else. Quer que eu leve mais alguma coisa? (Lucas isn't there yet.)

So when you're invited to a friend's house, you say Vou levar um vinho., although English says "I'll bring a bottle of wine". Your friend, who is at home, says Traz um vinho!

Three more verbs change their job when another verb follows them:

Pattern English
andar + gerund to have been doing lately
continuar + gerund to keep doing, to still be doing
passar a + infinitive to start doing (from then on)
passar por to go by, to go through
  • Ando dormindo mal. I've been sleeping badly lately.
  • Ela anda fazendo muitas perguntas. She's been asking a lot of questions lately.
  • Continua chovendo. It's still raining.
  • Eles continuam morando no mesmo bairro. They still live in the same neighborhood.
  • Depois da viagem, passei a acordar cedo. After the trip, I started waking up early.
  • Esse ônibus passa pela minha rua. This bus goes down my street.
  • Ela passou por um momento difícil. She went through a hard time.

Andar + gerund says the same as ter + participle from day 53 (Tenho dormido mal), and it's more common in conversation. After continuar, use the gerund, not the infinitive that English suggests: continua chovendo, "it continues to rain".
