Listen and read

Listen for the little words that glue two ideas together: que, quem, onde, o que. Notice what comes right before quem.

Lucas Então, quem a gente vai convidar para a festa? So, who are we going to invite to the party?

Emma Eu fiz uma lista. Primeiro, a Dona Cida, a vizinha com quem a Dona Marta toma café todo dia. I made a list. First, Dona Cida, the neighbor Dona Marta has coffee with every day.

Lucas Aquela senhora que mora no terceiro andar? That lady who lives on the third floor?

Emma Essa mesma. That’s the one. Then Seu Zé, of course, who knows everything that happens in the building.

Lucas E a família dela? And her family?

Emma Tem o Paulo, o filho de quem ela sempre fala. Ele mora em Belo Horizonte, a cidade onde ele trabalha. There’s Paulo, the son she’s always talking about. He lives in Belo Horizonte, the city where he works.

Lucas Você conseguiu falar com ele? Did you manage to talk to him?

Emma Consegui! Descobri o telefone dele numa agenda que a Dona Marta me emprestou. Ele vem com a esposa. I did! I found his number in an address book that Dona Marta lent me. He’s coming with his wife.

Lucas Ótimo. E a música? Eu levo o violão e toco as músicas que ela conhece. Great. And the music? I’ll bring my guitar and play the songs she knows.

What she listens to most is old samba. There’s a singer she likes a lot: Cartola.

Lucas Cartola eu sei tocar! E o presente? Cartola I can play! And the present?

I don’t know yet. I want to give her something she really needs.

I follow a store online that sells kitchen things. It has some beautiful pots, which are made in Minas.

Emma Boa ideia! Good idea! Everything she makes in that kitchen turns out delicious.

Then it’s decided: the woman who cooks for everybody is getting new pots.

Finally an idea we both like!

Você entendeu?

  1. Com quem a Dona Marta toma café todo dia?Com o Seu Zé. Com a Dona Cida. Com o Paulo.
  2. Onde mora o filho da Dona Marta? No Rio de Janeiro. No terceiro andar. Em Belo Horizonte.
  3. Como a Emma descobriu o telefone do Paulo?Numa lista do Seu Zé. Numa loja na internet. Numa agenda da Dona Marta.
Panelas novas.

Que: who, which, that

A relative clause (oração relativa) is a small sentence attached to a noun to say which one you mean: "the neighbor who lives upstairs", "the book that I read". English chooses between who, which and that. Portuguese uses que for all three, for people and for things.

The neighbor who lives on the third floor is called Cida.
  • O livro que eu li é ótimo. The book that I read is great.
  • As músicas que ele toca são antigas. The songs he plays are old.

Look at the last English sentence: "the songs he plays". English often drops that. Portuguese never drops que. Every time you can add "that" or "who" to the English, you need que in the Portuguese.

English Portuguese
the movie I saw o filme que eu vi
the people I know as pessoas que eu conheço
the present we bought o presente que a gente comprou

When you're describing someone or something you haven't found yet, the verb after que goes in the subjunctive, as you learned on day 61: Procuro um presente que seja útil. I'm looking for a present that's useful.

Prepositions go first: com quem, de que, onde

In English you can finish with the preposition: "the person I work with", "the movie I told you about". In Portuguese a preposition can never be left at the end. It moves to the front of the relative clause, as in formal English "the person with whom I work".

What follows the preposition depends on what you're talking about:

After a preposition Use Portuguese English
a person quem a colega com quem eu trabalho the colleague I work with
a person quem o filho de quem ela fala the son she talks about
a person quem o amigo para quem eu liguei the friend I called
a thing que o filme de que eu gosto the movie I like
a thing que a empresa em que ela trabalha the company she works at
a place onde a cidade onde eu moro the city where I live

The preposition is the one the verb always takes, which is why day 46 asked you to learn verbs together with theirs: gostar de, falar de, precisar de, trabalhar com, morar em, pensar em.

That's the friend I told you about.
= O bairro onde eu moro é tranquilo. The neighborhood I live in is quiet.
I don't know the person you were talking to.

Onde is only for places. For a time, use em que or plain que: o dia em que a gente se conheceu, the day we met.

What people say instead. In relaxed conversation, Brazilians often avoid the preposition at the front. You'll hear two shortcuts:

  • The preposition disappears: o filme que eu gosto, a empresa que ela trabalha.
  • Or it stays in its normal place with a pronoun: a amiga que eu falei dela, o colega que eu trabalho com ele.

Both are everywhere in speech, and nobody will blink if you use the first one. In anything written with care, and in this course's exercises, put the preposition first: o filme de que eu gosto.

O que and tudo que: what, everything that

When there is no noun to attach que to, Portuguese adds o: o que means "what" in the sense of "the thing that".

  • Não entendi o que ele disse. I didn't understand what he said.
  • O que eu quero é descansar. What I want is to rest.
  • Você viu o que aconteceu? Did you see what happened?

Compare: o livro que eu li (the book that I read: there's a noun) and o que eu li (what I read: no noun).

Tudo que or tudo o que is "everything (that)". Both are correct and mean the same.

  • Tudo que ela faz fica uma delícia. Everything she makes turns out delicious.
  • O Seu Zé sabe tudo o que acontece no prédio. Seu Zé knows everything that happens in the building.

And quem on its own, with no noun before it, means "whoever" or "the one who": Quem chegar primeiro abre a porta. Whoever gets there first opens the door. Foi a Emma quem teve a ideia. It was Emma who had the idea.

For reading: cujo and o qual

You'll meet two more relatives in newspapers, contracts and books. You need to understand them, and you can go a long time without saying them.

Cujo, cuja, cujos, cujas means "whose". It agrees with the thing that is owned, not with the owner, and no article follows it.

  • A vizinha cujo filho mora em Belo Horizonte faz aniversário no sábado. The neighbor whose son lives in Belo Horizonte has her birthday on Saturday.
  • O arquiteto cujas casas são famosas nasceu aqui. The architect whose houses are famous was born here.

In conversation people go around it: a vizinha que o filho mora em Belo Horizonte, or two sentences.

O qual, a qual, os quais, as quais is a formal replacement for que or quem, mostly after a preposition. It agrees with the noun it refers to.

The meeting in which the decision was made lasted three hours.
The colleagues with whom she works are young.

Words for today: adverbs in -mente

English makes adverbs with -ly. Portuguese adds -mente to the feminine form of the adjective: rápida → rapidamente, completa → completamente. Adjectives with one form for both genders don't change: feliz → felizmente, fácil → facilmente. Any accent mark is dropped.

Portuguese English
realmente really
finalmente finally
felizmente fortunately, luckily
infelizmente unfortunately
provavelmente probably
principalmente mainly, especially
exatamente exactly
completamente completely
geralmente usually
rapidamente quickly
facilmente easily
imediatamente immediately
  • Infelizmente, a Bia só chega no sábado. Unfortunately, Bia only arrives on Saturday.
  • É exatamente o que eu queria. It's exactly what I wanted.
