Listen and read
Listen without reading. Every time you hear an infinitive (fazer, chegar, saber…), ask yourself: who is doing it? Portuguese tells you, and today you'll see how.
Lucas, Saturday is Dona Marta’s birthday. Shall we throw a surprise party for her here at my place?
Lucas Adorei a ideia! I love the idea! But for the party to be a surprise, it’s important that nobody tells her anything.
Emma Eu sei. I know. Seu Zé is going to take Dona Marta to the market so we can get everything ready without her seeing.
Lucas Perfeito. E o que falta fazer? Perfect. And what’s left to do?
Emma Muita coisa! A lot! Before the guests arrive, I need to give the place a good cleaning. The apartment has been a mess since the trip.
Lucas Então eu varro a sala e passo pano no chão, para você tirar o pó e arrumar a cozinha. Then I’ll sweep the living room and mop the floor, so you can dust and tidy the kitchen.
Emma Combinado. E é melhor a gente comprar as bebidas na sexta. Deal. And we’d better buy the drinks on Friday.
Lucas Deixa as bebidas comigo. Leave the drinks to me. And Rafa asked me to stop by the restaurant on Saturday: he’s going to make the party snacks.
Emma Que bom! Great! After you two bring the food, I’ll set the table.
Lucas E o bolo? And the cake?
Carol asked us not to worry about the cake. She and Bia are going to order one.
Lucas A Bia vem do Rio? Sem eu saber? Bia’s coming from Rio? Without me knowing?
Emma Ela me ligou ontem. She called me yesterday. She asked us not to tell anyone until she buys her ticket.
Lucas Tá bom. E olha: apesar de eu sempre chegar atrasado, no sábado eu vou chegar cedo. Prometo! OK. And look: even though I always arrive late, on Saturday I’m going to be early. I promise!
Emma Só acredito vendo! I’ll believe it when I see it!
Você entendeu? (Did you understand?)
- Para quem é a festa surpresa?Para a Bia. Para a Dona Marta. Para a Carol.

An infinitive with its own subject
In English, when an infinitive has a subject of its own, you say "for me to do", "for them to do", "without her seeing". Portuguese does something very unusual: it puts a normal subject (eu, ela, eles) in front of the infinitive and, for nós and for vocês / eles / elas, adds an ending to it. This is called the personal infinitive (infinitivo pessoal): an infinitive that shows who is doing the action.
The endings are the easiest in the language. Take the whole infinitive and add nothing, nothing, -mos, -em.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| para eu fazer | for me to do |
| para você fazer / para ele fazer / para ela fazer | for you / him / her to do |
| para nós fazermos | for us to do |
| para vocês fazerem / para eles fazerem / para elas fazerem | for you all / them to do |
A gente takes the form with no ending, as always: para a gente fazer.
There are no irregular verbs here. Every verb starts from its infinitive, even the ones that are irregular everywhere else:
| Infinitive | nós | vocês, eles, elas |
|---|---|---|
| ser | sermos | serem |
| ter | termos | terem |
| ir | irmos | irem |
| vir | virmos | virem |
| estar | estarmos | estarem |
| trazer | trazermos | trazerem |
- A Emma comprou pão para nós tomarmos café. Emma bought bread for us to have breakfast.
- O Seu Zé abriu a porta para eles entrarem. Seu Zé opened the door for them to come in.
- Ela saiu sem eu ver. She left without me seeing.
- É para a gente esperar aqui? Are we supposed to wait here?
Para eu fazer, never para mim fazer. English says "for me to do", so English speakers want para mim fazer. But here the pronoun is the subject of fazer, and a subject is always eu. Use mim only when no verb follows:
- Esse bolo é para mim. This cake is for me.
- Esse bolo é para eu levar. This cake is for me to take.
You will hear pra mim fazer in Brazil, but it's the classic mistake teachers correct, so don't copy it. One case looks similar and is fine: in É difícil para mim acordar cedo, para mim means "for me, in my case" and belongs with difícil. You can move it to the front (Para mim, é difícil acordar cedo), which you can't do with para eu levar.
Haven't I seen these forms before? For regular verbs, yes: chegar, chegarmos, chegarem look exactly like the future subjunctive you learned on day 64 (quando eles chegarem). The irregular verbs show the difference. After quando and se you need the future subjunctive: quando nós fizermos, se eles forem. After a preposition you need the personal infinitive: para nós fazermos, antes de eles irem.
Where you use it
1. After a preposition, when you need to say who does the action. These are the common ones:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| para | for … to, so that |
| antes de | before |
| depois de | after |
| sem | without |
| até | until |
| por | for, because of |
| apesar de | although, in spite of |
I'm going to sweep the living room before the guests arrive.
After you bring the food, I'll set the table.
- Não saiam sem eu falar com vocês. Don't leave without me talking to you.
- Fica aqui até a gente voltar. Stay here until we come back.
- Fico feliz por vocês estarem aqui. I'm happy that you're here.
Although they live far away, they always come to visit us.
2. After é melhor, é importante, é bom, é difícil, é possível and other expressions like them:
- É melhor a gente comprar as bebidas na sexta. We'd better buy the drinks on Friday.
- É importante vocês chegarem cedo. It's important for you all to arrive early.
- É bom nós sabermos quantas pessoas vêm. It's good for us to know how many people are coming.
3. After pedir para and dizer para when you report a request, as you saw on day 68: O Rafa pediu para eu passar no restaurante. Rafa asked me to stop by the restaurant.
When the subject doesn't change, you don't need any of this. The plain infinitive you've used since day 26 is enough, because the main verb already shows who it is: Nós lavamos a louça antes de sair. You will also see the ending there, especially when the infinitive comes first (Antes de sairmos, lavamos a louça.), and both are correct. The endings matter when the infinitive has a different subject, or when it's the only verb that can show who is acting.
Antes de o Lucas chegar or antes do Lucas chegar? Careful writing keeps de and the article apart when the noun is the subject of the infinitive: antes de o Lucas chegar, antes de eles chegarem. In speech everyone joins them, antes do Lucas chegar, antes deles chegarem, and you'll see that in writing more and more. This course writes them apart and accepts both from you.
A shortcut around the subjunctive
Here is the good news of the day. Many of the conjunctions that forced you into the subjunctive in weeks 9 and 10 have a twin made of a preposition and the personal infinitive. The meaning is the same, and Brazilians use the infinitive version much more in conversation.
| With the subjunctive | With the personal infinitive | English |
|---|---|---|
| para que eles entendam | para eles entenderem | so that they understand |
| antes que ela chegue | antes de ela chegar | before she arrives |
| sem que eu saiba | sem eu saber | without my knowing |
| até que vocês voltem | até vocês voltarem | until you come back |
| embora nós estejamos cansados | apesar de nós estarmos cansados | although we're tired |
| é importante que vocês venham | é importante vocês virem | it's important that you come |
The infinitive version also saves you from choosing a tense. Para que eles entendam becomes para que eles entendessem in the past, but para eles entenderem never changes: Eu falei devagar para eles entenderem.
This shortcut works only where a preposition is available. After querer que, esperar que, talvez, tomara que, duvido que you still need the subjunctive.
Housework
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| a faxina | a thorough housecleaning |
| fazer uma faxina | to give the place a good cleaning |
| arrumar | to tidy up, to get ready |
| limpar | to clean |
| varrer | to sweep |
| a vassoura | the broom |
| passar pano | to mop (to wipe the floor with a wet cloth) |
| passar aspirador | to vacuum |
| tirar o pó | to dust |
| lavar a louça | to wash the dishes |
| tirar o lixo | to take out the trash |
| pôr a mesa | to set the table |
| lavar a roupa | to do the laundry |
| a bagunça | the mess |
| o convidado / a convidada | the guest |
| encomendar | to order (something to be made or delivered) |
| os salgadinhos | savory party snacks |
