Listen and read
Listen for the short reactions: discordo, pode ser, com certeza, sei lá, tanto faz, de jeito nenhum, depende. Who agrees with whom?
Emma Gente, preciso de uma opinião rápida. Qual embalagem eu mostro primeiro, a verde ou a amarela? Guys, I need a quick opinion. Which packaging do I show first, the green one or the yellow one?
Lucas Na minha opinião, a verde. É mais moderna. In my opinion, the green one. It’s more modern.
Carol Discordo. I disagree. I think the yellow one looks more like Brazil.
Maybe, but Renata is looking for packaging that’s different from the others.
Carol Com certeza. Definitely. But she also wants a brand that customers recognize from far away.
Emma Então eu começo com a amarela e termino com a verde? So I start with the yellow one and finish with the green one?
Lucas Sei lá… Para mim, tanto faz. As duas são boas. I don’t know… For me, either way. They’re both good.
Carol Eu concordo com a Emma. E a terceira ideia, a azul? I agree with Emma. And the third idea, the blue one?
Emma De jeito nenhum! No way! There’s nobody here who likes the blue one.
Lucas Depende. Eu conheço uma pessoa que gosta. Eu! That depends. I know one person who likes it. Me!
Carol Tudo bem, mostre as três. Emma, você precisa de alguma coisa? All right, show all three. Emma, do you need anything?
Emma Preciso de alguém que me traga um copo d’água e me diga que vai dar tudo certo. I need someone who’ll bring me a glass of water and tell me everything will work out.
Lucas Eu trago a água. E vai dar tudo certo! I’ll bring the water. And everything will work out!
Carol A Renata chegou. Vamos lá. Que dê tudo certo, Emma! Renata’s here. Let’s go. May it all go well, Emma!
Lucas Que seja um sucesso! Boa sorte! May it be a success! Good luck!

Giving and reacting to opinions
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Na minha opinião, … | In my opinion, … |
| Eu acho que… | I think… |
| Para mim, … | For me, …; If you ask me, … |
| O que você acha? | What do you think? |
| Concordo. | I agree. |
| Discordo. / Não concordo. | I disagree. / I don't agree. |
| Você tem razão. | You're right. |
| Com certeza! | Definitely! For sure! |
| Pode ser. | Maybe. Could be. |
| Depende. | It depends. |
| Sei lá. | I don't know. Who knows. |
| Tanto faz. | Either way. It makes no difference. |
| De jeito nenhum! | No way! Absolutely not! |
In my opinion, São Paulo is more interesting than Rio.
- Eu concordo com você. I agree with you.
- O que você acha da embalagem verde? What do you think of the green packaging?
- Chá ou café? Para mim, tanto faz. Tea or coffee? Either is fine with me.
Some notes on using them well:
- You agree com a person: Concordo com a Carol. You ask for an opinion de something: O que você acha do filme?
- Sei lá is very common and very informal. Between friends it's a relaxed "dunno". To a boss or a client, say Não sei. or Não tenho certeza.
- Tanto faz is neutral when you really don't mind. Said flatly, it can sound as if you don't care, like "whatever" in English.
- Pode ser on its own is also how Brazilians accept an offer without much excitement: Quer um café? — Pode ser. "Sure, why not."
- And don't forget yesterday's rule: acho que takes the normal forms, não acho que the subjunctive.
Known, or not found yet?
Here is the last big use of the present subjunctive. When you describe a person or a thing with que ("who", "that"), ask yourself: do I know this person or thing exists, and which one it is?
- Yes, I have a particular one in mind → normal forms.
- No, I'm looking for one, I want one, I need one, or I'm saying there isn't one → subjunctive.
| Known: normal forms | Not found yet: subjunctive |
|---|---|
| Conheço alguém que fala inglês. | Procuro alguém que fale inglês. |
| Eu moro numa cidade que tem praia. | Quero morar numa cidade que tenha praia. |
Listen to one pair:
- Conheço alguém que fala inglês. I know someone who speaks English. (a real person: my neighbor)
- Procuro alguém que fale inglês. I'm looking for someone who speaks English. (anyone will do, and maybe nobody does)
English uses the same words in both sentences, so this takes practice.
The agency is looking for a programmer who knows English.
I need someone to take me to the airport.
There's nothing in this store that I want to buy.
I don't know anyone who knows Salvador better than Rafa.
In questions you'll hear both. When you ask whether such a person exists, the careful form is the subjunctive: Tem alguém aqui que fale inglês? Is there anyone here who speaks English? In everyday speech many Brazilians use the normal form here too (Tem alguém aqui que fala inglês?). After procuro, quero, preciso de and after ninguém and nada, stay with the subjunctive.
Wishes with Que…!
Take a sentence with espero que, drop the espero, and you have a wish. It's short, warm, and Brazilians use it all the time.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Que dê tudo certo! | May everything work out! |
| Que seja um sucesso! | May it be a success! |
| Que vocês sejam muito felizes! | May you (both) be very happy! |
| Que você tenha uma ótima viagem! | Have a great trip! |
| Que venha o fim de semana! | Bring on the weekend! |
And some ready-made wishes with no verb at all, which you can use from today:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Boa sorte! | Good luck! |
| Boa viagem! | Have a good trip! |
| Bom trabalho! | Have a good day at work! Good work! |
| Parabéns! | Congratulations! Happy birthday! |
| Melhoras! | Get well soon! |
Four jobs, one question. This week you've met four uses of the present subjunctive: after wishes (quero que), feelings (fico feliz que), doubt (duvido que, talvez) and for things not found yet (alguém que fale), plus the linking words of day 60. They share one idea: the verb is not stating a fact. When you're unsure, ask "am I telling someone a fact?" If not, the subjunctive is probably right.
