Listen and read

Listen for who does what for whom. The small words me, te and nos come right before the verb.

Carol Pessoal, o prazo é hoje às seis. Quem pode me ajudar com a apresentação? Everyone, the deadline is today at six. Who can help me with the presentation?

Lucas Eu te ajudo, Carol. Você me manda os arquivos? I’ll help you, Carol. Will you send me the files?

Carol Mando agora. Emma, você já mostrou o desenho para o cliente? I’ll send them now. Emma, have you shown the design to the client yet?

Emma Ainda não. Eu liguei para ele de manhã, mas ele não atendeu. Vou mandar o desenho para ele agora. Not yet. I called him this morning, but he didn’t pick up. I’m going to send him the design now.

Carol Ótimo. Depois você me mostra a resposta dele? Great. Will you show me his reply afterwards?

Emma Mostro, sim. Yes, I will.

Lucas Carol, o Rafa convidou a gente para um jantar no restaurante dele hoje. Ele vai nos esperar às oito. Carol, Rafa invited us to a dinner at his restaurant tonight. He’ll be waiting for us at eight.

Carol Que bom! Emma, você vai comigo, de carro? How nice! Emma, are you coming with me, by car?

Emma Vou, obrigada! Mas preciso de mais dez minutos. Vocês me esperam? Yes, thank you! But I need ten more minutes. Will you wait for me?

Carol Claro, a gente te espera. Of course, we’ll wait for you.

Emma Pronto, mandei! … Nossa, o cliente já respondeu. Ele adorou! Done, I’ve sent it! … Wow, the client has already replied. He loved it!

Carol Que ótimo! Parabéns, Emma. That’s great! Congratulations, Emma.

Lucas Carol, posso te dar a minha parte amanhã? Carol, can I give you my part tomorrow?

Carol Não, Lucas. Hoje! No, Lucas. Today!

Você entendeu?

  1. Quem vai ajudar a Carol com a apresentação?O Rafa. O Lucas. A Emma.

  4. Com quem a Emma vai para o restaurante?Com o Rafa, de metrô. Com a Carol, de carro. Com o Lucas, de ônibus.

Me, te, nos

In "Lucas helps me", the word "me" is the object: the person the action is done to. English puts it after the verb. Portuguese puts it before the verb.

Portuguese English Example
me me, to me O Lucas me ajuda.
te you, to you Eu te ajudo.
nos us, to us A Carol nos convidou.
  • Você me entende? Do you understand me?
  • Eu te ligo amanhã. I'll call you tomorrow.
  • Ele me deu um presente. He gave me a present.
  • A Dona Marta nos convidou para o almoço. Dona Marta invited us to lunch.

You already know me and nos from the reflexive verbs on day 37. They go in the same places: after não (Ela não me viu.) and, when there are two verbs, before the second one (Você pode me ajudar?, Eu vou te ligar.).

Notice that these three words cover both "me" and "to me". You don't need para: Ele me deu um livro is "He gave me a book" or "He gave a book to me".

Te, with você? Yes. Te originally belongs to tu, but Brazilians happily use it with people they call você, and it sounds warm and natural between friends. The other choice is to put você after the verb: Eu ajudo você. Both are fine. For more than one person, there is only one way: Eu ajudo vocês.

In the same way, people often say a gente after the verb where the textbook has nos: O Rafa convidou a gente. Rafa invited us.

Me liga! (Call me!) is something you'll hear every day. Liga here is a command form, which you'll study on day 50. For now, learn Me liga! and Me ajuda! (Help me!) as whole phrases. In careful writing a sentence isn't supposed to begin with me or te, but in speech it happens all the time.

Him, her, them: what's written and what's said

Here Brazilian Portuguese has two systems, and you need to speak one and recognise the other.

In writing (books, newspapers, formal emails), "him", "her", "it" and "them" are o, a, os, as, placed before the verb. They look exactly like the words for "the".

In conversation, almost nobody uses them. People say ele, ela, eles, elas after the verb.

Written Spoken English
Eu o vi ontem. Eu vi ele ontem. I saw him yesterday.
Eu a convidei. Eu convidei ela. I invited her.
Eu os conheço. Eu conheço eles. I know them.
Eu as ajudei. Eu ajudei elas. I helped them. (women)

There is a third way, which is the most common of all, especially for things: say nothing. When it's clear what you're talking about, Brazilians leave the object out.

  • Você viu o filme? — Vi. Did you see the movie? — I saw (it).
  • Você conhece a Bia? — Conheço. Do you know Bia? — I know (her).
  • Onde está a chave? — Eu não peguei. Where's the key? — I didn't take (it).

Which should you use? Speak the way Brazilians speak: Eu vi ele or just Vi. Use o and a when you write something formal. Some teachers still call vi ele a mistake, because it isn't accepted in formal writing, but it is what educated Brazilians say every day.

One more written form to recognise. After an infinitive, o and a become -lo and -la, and the verb loses its r: ajudar + o → Vou ajudá-lo. (I'm going to help him.) You'll see it in the polite phrase Prazer em conhecê-la. (Pleased to meet you, said to a woman.) In speech: Vou ajudar ele.

To him, to her: para ele, para ela

For "to him" and "to her", the written form is lhe: Eu lhe dei o livro. In conversation, Brazilians say para ele and para ela after the verb.

  • Eu dei o livro para ela. I gave her the book.
  • Vou mandar o desenho para ele. I'm going to send him the design.
  • A Emma mostrou as fotos para eles. Emma showed them the photos.

Today's verbs fall into two groups, and they don't always match English:

Portuguese English Example
dar … para to give … to Eu dei um presente para a Bia.
mandar … para to send … to Ela mandou uma mensagem para o Lucas.
mostrar … para to show … to Você mostrou a foto para a Carol?
ligar para to call (on the phone) Eu liguei para o cliente.
ajudar to help Eu ajudei a Carol.
convidar to invite O Rafa convidou a Emma.
esperar to wait for A gente esperou o Lucas.

Two traps. In English you "call someone", but in Portuguese you ligar para someone: Eu liguei para ela. And in English you "wait for someone", but esperar takes no preposition: Eu espero você aqui. I'll wait for you here.

After a preposition: para mim, comigo

After words like para, de and sem, eu becomes mim. The other pronouns don't change.

Portuguese English
para mim for me, to me
para você for you
para ele / para ela for him / for her
para a gente / para nós for us
para vocês for you (all)
para eles / para elas for them

Com is special: "with me" is one word, comigo.

Portuguese English
comigo with me
com você with you
com ele / com ela with him / with her
com a gente with us
com vocês with you (all)
com eles / com elas with them
  • Este café é para mim? Is this coffee for me?
  • Você vai comigo? Are you coming with me?
  • Eu quero falar com você. I want to talk to you.
  • O Lucas vai com a gente. Lucas is coming with us.

In formal Portuguese "with us" is conosco; in conversation it's com a gente.
