Listen and read
Listen and trace the route in your head. Which way does Emma turn, and where does she get off?
Emma Com licença! Eu estou perdida. Como eu chego na Avenida Paulista? Excuse me! I’m lost. How do I get to Avenida Paulista?
Moça A Paulista? É longe daqui. Você tem que pegar o metrô. Paulista? It’s far from here. You have to take the subway.
Emma Onde fica a estação? Where is the station?
Moça Siga em frente e vire à direita na segunda rua. A estação fica na esquina. Go straight ahead and turn right at the second street. The station is on the corner.
Emma E qual linha eu pego? And which line do I take?
Moça Você pega a linha azul e desce na terceira estação. Depois pega a linha verde. You take the blue line and get off at the third station. Then you take the green line.

Moça De nada! You’re welcome!

Asking the way
You already know Onde fica…? from days 5 and 18. Here's the rest of what you need to ask.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Onde fica a estação? | OHN-djee FEE-kah ah ees-tah-SOWNG | Where is the station? |
| Como eu chego no centro? | KOH-moo EH-oo SHAY-goo noo SEN-troo | How do I get downtown? |
| Como eu chego na Avenida Paulista? | KOH-moo EH-oo SHAY-goo nah ah-veh-NEE-dah pow-LEES-tah | How do I get to Avenida Paulista? |
| Tem um banco perto daqui? | tayng oong BAHN-koo PEHR-too dah-KEE | Is there a bank near here? |
| É longe? / É perto? | eh LOHN-zhee / eh PEHR-too | Is it far? / Is it close? |
| Dá para ir a pé? | dah PAH-rah eer ah peh | Can I walk there? |
| Eu estou perdido. / Eu estou perdida. | EH-oo ees-TOH pehr-DJEE-doo / pehr-DJEE-dah | I'm lost. (a man / a woman) |
| Fica a dois quarteirões daqui. | FEE-kah ah doys kwar-tay-ROYNGS dah-KEE | It's two blocks from here. |
Daqui is de + aqui: "from here".
Chegar is "to arrive", so Como eu chego…? is literally "How do I arrive…?". In speech, Brazilians say chegar em a place, and em joins the article as usual: no centro, na estação, na Avenida Paulista. Grammar books prefer chegar a (ao centro, à estação). You'll hear and read both.
Following directions
Directions use a special verb form for telling someone what to do. You'll learn how to build it on day 50. For now, learn these five as fixed phrases, because they're the ones you'll hear in the street.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Vire à direita. | VEE-ree ah djee-RAY-tah | Turn right. |
| Vire à esquerda. | VEE-ree ah ees-KEHR-dah | Turn left. |
| Siga em frente. | SEE-gah ayng FREN-tchee | Go straight ahead. |
| Atravesse a rua. | ah-trah-VEH-see ah HOO-ah | Cross the street. |
| Pegue a primeira rua. | PEH-ghee ah pree-MAY-rah HOO-ah | Take the first street. |
| na esquina | nah ees-KEE-nah | on the corner, at the corner |
| o quarteirão | oo kwar-tay-ROWNG | the block |
| até | ah-TEH | until, as far as |
| o sinal | oo see-NOW | the traffic light |
- Siga em frente até o sinal. Go straight ahead as far as the traffic light.
- Vire à esquerda na esquina. Turn left at the corner.
- Atravesse a rua e pegue a primeira rua à direita. Cross the street and take the first street on the right.
You've seen até before, in até logo and até amanhã: "until later", "until tomorrow". It's the same word.
To count streets, stations and turns, you need the first three ordinals. Like other adjectives, they match the noun, and they go before it:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| primeiro / primeira | pree-MAY-roo / pree-MAY-rah | first |
| segundo / segunda | seh-GOON-doo / seh-GOON-dah | second |
| terceiro / terceira | tehr-SAY-roo / tehr-SAY-rah | third |
- Vire à direita na segunda rua. Turn right at the second street.
- É o terceiro prédio à esquerda. It's the third building on the left.
You'll also hear plain present-tense directions. Many Brazilians give directions as a description of what you do, with você and the normal present: Você segue em frente, vira à direita e atravessa a rua. That's what the young woman does when she says Você pega a linha azul e desce na terceira estação. If you understand both styles, you're ready.
Getting around
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| pegar o ônibus / o metrô | peh-GAR oo OH-nee-boos / oo meh-TROH | to take the bus / the subway |
| descer | deh-SEHR | to get off, to go down |
| o ponto de ônibus | oo POHN-too djee OH-nee-boos | the bus stop |
| a estação de metrô | ah ees-tah-SOWNG djee meh-TROH | the subway station |
| a linha | ah LEE-nyah | the line |
| voltar | vohw-TAR | to go back, to come back |
| passar | pah-SAR | to pass, to go by |
| Quanto tempo demora? | KWAHN-too TEN-poo deh-MAW-rah | How long does it take? |
| Demora dez minutos. | deh-MAW-rah dehs mee-NOO-toos | It takes ten minutes. |
| Leva meia hora. | LEH-vah MAY-ah AW-rah | It takes half an hour. |
Pegar and descer are regular: eu pego, você pega; você desce, nós descemos. One spelling detail: eu desço is written with ç, to keep the "s" sound before o.
- Eu pego o ônibus na esquina e desço no centro. I take the bus on the corner and get off downtown.
- Esse ônibus passa na Avenida Paulista? Does this bus go along Avenida Paulista?
- Eu volto para casa de metrô. I go back home by subway.
For how long something takes, use demorar or levar with an amount of time. Both mean "to take" here, and neither needs a word for "it":
- De metrô, demora vinte minutos. By subway, it takes twenty minutes.
- A pé, leva uma hora. On foot, it takes an hour.
Levar has two jobs. Yesterday you met Vou levar ("I'll take it") in the store. Today it means "to take" an amount of time. What it never means is "to take" a bus: that's always pegar.
