The days of the week

Portuguese Sounds like English
segunda-feira seh-GOON-dah FAY-rah Monday
terça-feira TAYR-sah FAY-rah Tuesday
quarta-feira KWAR-tah FAY-rah Wednesday
quinta-feira KEEN-tah FAY-rah Thursday
sexta-feira SAYS-tah FAY-rah Friday
sábado SAH-bah-doo Saturday
domingo doh-MEENG-goo Sunday
o fim de semana oo feeng djee seh-MAH-nah the weekend

The five working days are numbered: segunda is "second", terça "third", and so on up to sexta, "sixth". In conversation people drop -feira: Hoje é segunda. Days are written without a capital letter.

The -feira days are feminine; sábado and domingo are masculine. That decides how you say "on":

Portuguese Sounds like English
na segunda nah seh-GOON-dah on Monday (this one)
no sábado noo SAH-bah-doo on Saturday (this one)
às segundas ahs seh-GOON-dahs on Mondays (every Monday)
aos sábados ows SAH-bah-doos on Saturdays (every Saturday)
de segunda a sexta djee seh-GOON-dah ah SAYS-tah from Monday to Friday
no fim de semana noo feeng djee seh-MAH-nah on the weekend
  • Na quinta eu trabalho em casa. On Thursday I work at home.
  • Às terças ela estuda inglês. On Tuesdays she studies English.
  • A gente não trabalha no domingo. We don't work on Sunday.

Today, tomorrow, morning, night

Portuguese Sounds like English
hoje OH-zhee today
amanhã ah-mah-NYAHNG tomorrow
agora ah-GAW-rah now
de manhã djee mah-NYAHNG in the morning
à tarde ah TAR-djee in the afternoon
à noite ah NOY-tchee in the evening, at night
cedo SAY-doo early
tarde TAR-djee late

Put them together: hoje à noite (tonight), amanhã de manhã (tomorrow morning), amanhã à tarde (tomorrow afternoon).

  • Hoje eu trabalho em casa. Today I'm working at home.
  • De manhã eu tomo café na padaria. In the morning I have coffee at the bakery.
  • Amanhã é sábado. Tomorrow is Saturday.

Two words in one. A tarde is "the afternoon" and tarde is also "late": Ele chega tarde. (He arrives late.) And a manhã is "the morning" while amanhã is "tomorrow". The accent on à in à tarde and à noite doesn't change the sound; it only shows that two little words have merged into one.

What time is it?

Portuguese Sounds like English
Que horas são? kee AW-rahs sowng What time is it?
É uma hora. eh OO-mah AW-rah It's one o'clock.
São duas horas. sowng DOO-ahs AW-rahs It's two o'clock.
São duas e meia. sowng DOO-ahs ee MAY-ah It's two thirty.
São três e quinze. sowng trays ee KEEN-zee It's three fifteen.
São dez e cinco. sowng dehs ee SEEN-koo It's five past ten.
É meio-dia. eh MAY-oo DJEE-ah It's noon.
É meia-noite. eh MAY-ah NOY-tchee It's midnight.

How it works:

  • É for one o'clock, noon and midnight (they're each one thing). São for every other hour, because two or more hours are plural.
  • Hora is feminine, so it's uma hora and duas horas, never um or dois.
  • Minutes are added with e: São quatro e vinte. "Half past" is e meia: É uma e meia. É meio-dia e meia.
  • You can leave out horas: São oito.
  • For "ten to three" the easy way is to read the clock: São duas e cinquenta. You'll also hear São dez para as três., which is "ten to three" word for word.

To make clear which part of the day, add da manhã, da tarde or da noite: São sete da manhã. São oito da noite. Schedules, tickets and store signs use the 24-hour clock, written 18h or 18h30: dezoito horas, dezoito e trinta.

At what time?

To say at a time, use às. Three times are different because they aren't plural: à uma, ao meio-dia and à meia-noite.

Portuguese Sounds like English
A que horas…? ah kee AW-rahs At what time…?
às nove ahs NAW-vee at nine
às dez e meia ahs dehs ee MAY-ah at ten thirty
à uma ah OO-mah at one
ao meio-dia ow MAY-oo DJEE-ah at noon
das nove às seis dahs NAW-vee ahs sayss from nine to six
a reunião ah heh-oo-nee-OWNG the meeting
o almoço oo ow-MOH-soo lunch

Five verbs do most of the work in schedules.

Portuguese Sounds like English
começar koh-meh-SAR to start
terminar tehr-mee-NAR to end, to finish
chegar sheh-GAR to arrive, to get in
fechar feh-SHAR to close
abrir ah-BREER to open
começar terminar chegar fechar
eu começo termino chego fecho
você, ele, ela começa termina chega fecha
nós começamos terminamos chegamos fechamos
vocês, eles, elas começam terminam chegam fecham

Começar, terminar, chegar and fechar are regular -ar verbs. Abrir is an -ir verb, and those come on day 15. For now you need only two of its forms: abre (it opens) and abrem (they open).

  • A reunião começa às dez. The meeting starts at ten.
  • O almoço é ao meio-dia. Lunch is at noon.
  • A padaria abre às seis da manhã e fecha às oito da noite. The bakery opens at six in the morning and closes at eight at night.
  • Eu trabalho das nove às seis. I work from nine to six.
  • A que horas você chega? What time do you arrive?

In everyday speech people often drop the first a and ask Que horas a reunião começa? Both versions are fine. What you can't drop is the às in the answer: Começa às dez, not Começa dez.
