Numbers from 21 to 100
You know 0 to 20 from day 4. Now learn the tens.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| vinte | VEEN-tchee | 20 |
| trinta | TREEN-tah | 30 |
| quarenta | kwah-REN-tah | 40 |
| cinquenta | seen-KWEN-tah | 50 |
| sessenta | seh-SEN-tah | 60 |
| setenta | seh-TEN-tah | 70 |
| oitenta | oy-TEN-tah | 80 |
| noventa | noh-VEN-tah | 90 |
| cem | sayng | 100 |
For the numbers in between, say the ten, then e (and), then the unit: "twenty and one", "thirty and two".
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| vinte e um | VEEN-tchee ee oong | 21 |
| vinte e dois | VEEN-tchee ee doys | 22 |
| trinta e cinco | TREEN-tah ee SEEN-koo | 35 |
| quarenta e oito | kwah-REN-tah ee OY-too | 48 |
| sessenta e seis | seh-SEN-tah ee sayss | 66 |
| setenta e sete | seh-TEN-tah ee SEH-tchee | 77 |
| noventa e nove | noh-VEN-tah ee NAW-vee | 99 |
Um and dois still change for feminine words, as they did on day 4: vinte e uma pessoas (21 people), trinta e duas mesas (32 tables).
Sessenta or setenta? 60 and 70 are the pair everyone mixes up. Link them to the numbers they come from: seis → sessenta, sete → setenta. Say them one after the other a few times: sessenta, setenta.
Three big numbers you'll need for prices and rents:
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| duzentos | doo-ZEN-toos | 200 |
| quinhentos | kee-NYEN-toos | 500 |
| mil | meew | 1,000 |
"A thousand" is just mil, never um mil. The rest of the hundreds come on day 24.
Quanto custa?
Brazil's money is the real. More than one are reais, and one real has 100 centavos.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Quanto custa? | KWAHN-too KOOS-tah | How much does it cost? |
| Quanto custam? | KWAHN-too KOOS-towng | How much do they cost? |
| Quanto é? | KWAHN-too eh | How much is it? |
| um real | oong heh-OW | one real |
| dois reais | doys heh-ICE | two reais |
| cinquenta centavos | seen-KWEN-tah sen-TAH-voos | fifty centavos |
| caro / cara | KAH-roo / KAH-rah | expensive |
| barato / barata | bah-RAH-too / bah-RAH-tah | cheap |
Prices are written with R$ in front and a comma before the centavos: R$ 12,50. To read one aloud, say the reais, then e, then the centavos. The word centavos is usually dropped.
- R$ 12,50: doze reais e cinquenta
- R$ 8,90: oito reais e noventa
- R$ 1,00: um real
- R$ 0,75: setenta e cinco centavos
- R$ 100,00: cem reais
Custar (to cost) is a regular -ar verb. Use custa for one thing and custam for more than one.
- Quanto custa o café? — Custa sete reais.
- Quanto custam os livros? — Custam noventa reais.
Quanto é? is what you say at the register when you want the total. Caro and barato match the thing they describe: O bolo é caro. A bolsa é cara. O pão é barato.
Commas and periods swap places. Brazil writes R$ 1.500,00 where English writes 1,500.00: a period after the thousands and a comma before the centavos.
At the bakery
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Eu quero… | EH-oo KEH-roo | I want… |
| Me vê…, por favor. | mee vay, poor fah-VOHR | Give me…, please. (literally "see me…") |
| Mais alguma coisa? | mice ow-GOO-mah KOY-zah | Anything else? |
| Só isso, obrigado. | saw EE-soo, oh-bree-GAH-doo | That's all, thank you. |
| a padaria | ah pah-dah-REE-ah | the bakery |
| o pão | oo powng | bread; the bread roll |
| o pão de queijo | oo powng djee KAY-zhoo | cheese bread (a small, warm cheese roll) |
| o café com leite | oo kah-FEH kohng LAY-tchee | coffee with milk |
| o suco de laranja | oo SOO-koo djee lah-RAHN-zhah | orange juice |
| o bolo | oo BOH-loo | the cake |
| a água | ah AH-gwah | water |
Eu quero and Me vê are fixed phrases for now. Quero comes from querer (to want) and vê from ver (to see), two verbs you'll learn properly later. Neither phrase is rude: said with por favor and a smile, this is exactly how Brazilians order at a counter.
- Eu quero um café, por favor.
- Me vê dois pães de queijo, por favor.
- Eu quero uma água e um suco de laranja.
The plural of pão is pães: one of the few words in -ão that doesn't go to -ões.
Buying and paying
Comprar (to buy) and pagar (to pay) are regular -ar verbs.
| comprar | pagar | |
|---|---|---|
| eu | compro | pago |
| você, ele, ela | compra | paga |
| nós | compramos | pagamos |
| vocês, eles, elas | compram | pagam |
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| comprar | kohm-PRAR | to buy |
| pagar | pah-GAR | to pay |
| o dinheiro | oo djee-NYAY-roo | money; cash |
| o cartão | oo kar-TOWNG | the card |
| pagar com cartão | pah-GAR kohng kar-TOWNG | to pay by card |
| pagar em dinheiro | pah-GAR ayng djee-NYAY-roo | to pay in cash |
| pagar com Pix | pah-GAR kohng peeks | to pay with Pix |
| Vocês aceitam cartão? | voh-SAYS ah-SAY-towng kar-TOWNG | Do you take cards? |
| débito / crédito | DEH-bee-too / KREH-djee-too | debit / credit |
- Eu compro pão na padaria. I buy bread at the bakery.
- A gente paga com cartão. We pay by card.
- Eles pagam em dinheiro. They pay in cash.
Pix is Brazil's instant bank transfer, made from a phone, and almost everyone uses it, from supermarkets to street stalls. You need a Brazilian bank account for it, so as a visitor you'll pay with cartão or dinheiro. You'll still hear the question all the time: Cartão, dinheiro ou Pix?
