Estar: the other "to be"
Portuguese has two verbs where English has one "to be". You know ser from day 2. The second is estar, and you use it for how someone or something is at the moment and for where they are.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| eu estou | EH-oo ees-TOH | I am |
| você está | voh-SAY ees-TAH | you are |
| ele está / ela está | AY-lee ees-TAH / EH-lah ees-TAH | he is / she is |
| nós estamos | naws ees-TAH-moos | we are |
| vocês estão | voh-SAYS ees-TOWNG | you (all) are |
| eles estão / elas estão | AY-lees ees-TOWNG / EH-lahs ees-TOWNG | they are |
- Eu estou em casa. I'm at home.
- Você está cansado? Are you tired?
- Nós estamos no escritório. We're at the office.
- Eles não estão aqui. They aren't here.
Everything you know about questions, não and short answers still works: Você está em casa? — Estou. or Não, não estou.
How are you?
The full question is Como você está?, and a full answer is Estou bem, obrigado. or Estou bem, obrigada. Tudo bem? from day 1 asks the same thing in a more relaxed way.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| bem | bayng | well, fine |
| mal | mow | bad, unwell |
| cansado / cansada | kahn-SAH-doo / kahn-SAH-dah | tired |
| ocupado / ocupada | oh-koo-PAH-doo / oh-koo-PAH-dah | busy |
| nervoso / nervosa | nehr-VOH-zoo / nehr-VAW-zah | nervous |
| animado / animada | ah-nee-MAH-doo / ah-nee-MAH-dah | excited |
| feliz | feh-LEES | happy |
| triste | TREES-tchee | sad |
| doente | doh-EN-tchee | sick |
| com fome | kohng FOH-mee | hungry |
| com sede | kohng SAY-djee | thirsty |
| com sono | kohng SOH-noo | sleepy |
These words match the person, like every describing word so far: -o for a man, -a for a woman, and a plural ending for more than one person. Feliz ends in a consonant, so its plural is felizes. Bem and mal never change.
- O Lucas está cansado. Lucas is tired.
- A Emma está cansada. Emma is tired.
- Eles estão cansados. They're tired.
- Elas estão felizes. They're happy.
Hungry, thirsty and sleepy are phrases with com (with): estar com fome is literally "to be with hunger". The phrase is the same for everyone, so there's no ending to change: Ele está com fome. Elas estão com fome.
Where? No and na
The word for "in", "on" and "at" is em. When "the" comes after it, the two words join into one. This isn't optional: em o is never said or written.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| no escritório | noo ees-kree-TAW-ree-oo | at the office (em + o) |
| na mesa | nah MAY-zah | on the table (em + a) |
| nos Estados Unidos | nooz ees-TAH-dooz oo-NEE-doos | in the United States (em + os) |
| nas bolsas | nahs BOHW-sahs | in the bags (em + as) |
| em casa | ayng KAH-zah | at home |
| em São Paulo | ayng sowng POW-loo | in São Paulo |
- Plain em stays when there's no "the": with most cities (em Toronto, em Curitiba) and in the fixed phrase em casa, "at home".
- Countries keep the article you learned on day 2, so it's no Brasil, no Canadá and na Inglaterra.
A few useful places and words for "here and now":
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| a casa | ah KAH-zah | the house, home |
| a rua | ah HOO-ah | the street |
| a esquina | ah ees-KEE-nah | the street corner |
| o supermercado | oo soo-pehr-mehr-KAH-doo | the supermarket |
| o banheiro | oo bahn-YAY-roo | the bathroom, the restroom |
| aberto / aberta | ah-BEHR-too / ah-BEHR-tah | open |
| fechado / fechada | feh-SHAH-doo / feh-SHAH-dah | closed |
| aqui | ah-KEE | here |
| agora | ah-GAW-rah | now |
| hoje | OH-zhee | today |
To ask where someone or something is, there are two questions:
- Onde está…? for people and for things that can move: Onde está a chave? — Está na bolsa. For more than one, Onde estão…?: Onde estão os cartões?
- Onde fica…? for places that stay where they are, like buildings, streets and cities: Onde fica o supermercado? — Fica na esquina. Learn fica as a fixed phrase for now. Its verb, ficar, comes on day 18.
Ser or estar?
This is the choice English speakers have to think about most, so start with one idea: ser says what someone or something is, and estar says how or where it is right now.
| Portuguese | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| A Emma é canadense. | ah EH-mah eh kah-nah-DEN-see | Emma is Canadian. (what she is) |
| A Emma está no Brasil. | ah EH-mah ees-TAH noo brah-ZEEW | Emma is in Brazil. (where she is now) |
| O Lucas é programador. | oo LOO-kahs eh proh-grah-mah-DOHR | Lucas is a programmer. (what he is) |
| O Lucas está ocupado. | oo LOO-kahs ees-TAH oh-koo-PAH-doo | Lucas is busy. (how he is now) |
| O supermercado é grande. | oo soo-pehr-mehr-KAH-doo eh GRAHN-djee | The supermarket is big. (what it's like) |
| O supermercado está fechado. | oo soo-pehr-mehr-KAH-doo ees-TAH feh-SHAH-doo | The supermarket is closed. (how it is now) |
- Name, nationality, origin, job: ser. Eu sou de Toronto.
- Feelings, health, hunger, open or closed: estar. Eu estou cansada.
- Where a person or a movable thing is: estar. Eu estou em casa.
The mistake to avoid: Eu sou cansado and Eu sou em casa. Being tired and being at home are how and where you are today, so they need estar. This is a first look. Day 17 comes back to ser and estar in more detail.
What you'll hear: tô and tá
In everyday speech and in text messages, Brazilians shorten estar by dropping the "es": estou becomes tô and está becomes tá. You'll also hear tamos and tão.
- Tô cansada. I'm tired.
- Você tá em casa? Are you home?
- Tá bom! OK! / All right! (literally "it's good")
Understand these, and feel free to say them with friends. In anything formal, write the full forms.
