Emma Sou, sim. Boa noite! Yes, I am. Good evening!

Seu Zé Eu sou o Zé, o porteiro. Bem-vinda! I’m Zé, the doorman. Welcome!

Emma Prazer, Seu Zé! Nice to meet you, Seu Zé!

Seu Zé O apartamento é o doze. Você tem a chave? The apartment is number twelve. Do you have the key?

Emma Não, não tenho. No, I don’t.

Seu Zé Tudo bem. A Dona Marta tem duas chaves. That’s OK. Dona Marta has two keys.

Seu and Dona. Brazilians show respect to an older person with Seu (for a man) or Dona (for a woman) plus the first name: Seu Zé, Dona Marta. It's warmer than "Mr." and "Mrs." and you'll hear it everywhere.

Numbers 0 to 10

Portuguese Sounds like English
zero ZEH-roo 0
um / uma oong / OO-mah 1
dois / duas doys / DOO-ahs 2
três trays 3
quatro KWAH-troo 4
cinco SEEN-koo 5
seis sayss 6
sete SEH-tchee 7
oito OY-too 8
nove NAW-vee 9
dez dehs 10

Only one and two have a masculine and a feminine form, and they match the thing you're counting. One is the same word as "a": um and uma.

  • um livro, uma chave one book, one key
  • dois livros, duas chaves two books, two keys
  • três livros, três chaves three books, three keys (no change from three up)

Numbers 11 to 20

Portuguese Sounds like English
onze OHN-zee 11
doze DOH-zee 12
treze TRAY-zee 13
catorze kah-TOHR-zee 14
quinze KEEN-zee 15
dezesseis deh-zeh-SAYSS 16
dezessete deh-zeh-SEH-tchee 17
dezoito deh-ZOY-too 18
dezenove deh-zeh-NAW-vee 19
vinte VEEN-tchee 20

From 16 to 19 the numbers are "ten and six", "ten and seven" and so on, squeezed into one word: dez + e + seis = dezesseis.

Older than twenty? After 20, join the tens and the ones with e (and): vinte e um is 21 and vinte e nove is 29. So that you can say your own age today, here are the next tens: trinta (30), quarenta (40), cinquenta (50), sessenta (60). Day 11 teaches the numbers up to 100 properly.

Ter: to have

Portuguese Sounds like English
eu tenho EH-oo TEN-yoo I have
você tem voh-SAY tayng you have
ele tem / ela tem AY-lee tayng / EH-lah tayng he has / she has
nós temos naws TAY-moos we have
vocês têm voh-SAYS tayng you (all) have
eles têm / elas têm AY-lees tayng / EH-lahs tayng they have

Tem and têm sound the same. The little hat is only there in writing, to show that more than one person has something.

  • Eu tenho um carro. I have a car.
  • A Dona Marta tem duas chaves. Dona Marta has two keys.
  • Nós temos uma reunião. We have a meeting.
  • Eles têm três filhos. They have three children.

Questions and "not" work as they did with ser: the same words with a rising voice, and não before the verb. English needs "do" and "don't" here; Portuguese has nothing like them.

  • Você tem um carro? Do you have a car?
  • Tenho. Yes, I do. (You answer with the verb, as on day 2.)
  • Não, não tenho. No, I don't. (The first não is "no", the second is "not".)

When you say you don't have something, Brazilians often leave out um and uma: Eu não tenho carro.

Here are some things to have:

Portuguese Sounds like English
o carro oo KAH-hoo the car
o apartamento oo ah-par-tah-MEN-too the apartment
o cachorro oo kah-SHOH-hoo the dog
o gato oo GAH-too the cat
o filho / a filha oo FEE-lyoo / ah FEE-lyah the son / the daughter
o neto / a neta oo NEH-too / ah NEH-tah the grandson / the granddaughter
a reunião ah heh-oo-nee-OWNG the meeting
a pergunta ah pehr-GOON-tah the question
o número oo NOO-meh-roo the number
o telefone oo teh-leh-FOH-nee the telephone
o ano oo AH-noo the year

Os filhos can mean "the sons" or "the children" (sons and daughters together), because a mixed group is masculine.

How old are you?

In Portuguese you have your age. You don't say you are it.

  • Quantos anos você tem? How old are you? (literally "How many years do you have?")
  • Eu tenho vinte e nove anos. I'm twenty-nine.
  • O neto tem cinco anos. The grandson is five.

The mistake to avoid: Eu sou vinte anos is what English pushes you to say, and it's wrong. Age always goes with ter: Eu tenho vinte anos. Keep the word anos too. You can only drop it in a short answer: Quantos anos você tem? — Tenho vinte.

How many?

Quantos asks "how many" for masculine words and quantas for feminine ones.

  • Quantos livros você tem? How many books do you have?
  • Quantas chaves você tem? How many keys do you have?
  • Quantos filhos ela tem? How many children does she have?

Phone numbers

To ask for a number, say Qual é o seu número? or, in full, Qual é o seu número de telefone? Brazilians give phone numbers one digit at a time.

Why did Emma say meia? On the phone, seis (6) is easy to mix up with três (3). So when Brazilians read out a number digit by digit, they say meia for 6. It's short for meia dúzia, "half a dozen". You don't have to say it, but you do have to understand it: dois, meia, um is 2-6-1.
