Good to know
- Telefonar para: the person or place you call takes para: Telefonei para a minha mãe. (I phoned my mom.)
- Ligar is the everyday word. In conversation Brazilians nearly always say ligar para: Te ligo amanhã. (I'll call you tomorrow.) Telefonar sounds a little more formal or old-fashioned.
- Telefonema is a phone call, and it is masculine: Recebi um telefonema estranho. (I got a strange phone call.) You'll also hear ligação.
