Good to know

  • Afastar or se afastar? Afastar something de something else is to move it away. With the pronoun, se afastar de is to move away yourself, or to drift apart from someone: A gente se afastou com o tempo. (We drifted apart over time.)
  • Afastado means far from the center: um bairro afastado (an outlying neighborhood). It also means "on leave": Ele está afastado do trabalho. (He's on leave from work.)
  • The opposite is aproximar (to bring closer).
