Good to know

  • Spelling: ç becomes c before e: eu avancei, que ele avance.
  • Avançar o sinal is to run a red light: Ele avançou o sinal. (He ran the light.)
  • It is also about progress: avançar nos estudos (to get ahead in your studies). The noun is o avanço, and nível avançado is "advanced level".
  • With a video or a song, avançar is to skip ahead: Avança o vídeo um pouquinho. (Skip ahead in the video a little.)
