Good to know

  • Cala a boca! means "Shut up!". It is very common and it is rude, though friends say it as a joke. To be polite, say Fica quieto, por favor. (Be quiet, please.) or Silêncio, por favor. (Silence, please.)
  • Se calar (with me, se) means to go quiet or to stop talking: Ela se calou. (She went quiet.) Without the pronoun, calar needs an object: calar a boca (to shut your mouth).
  • Ficar calado is the usual way to say "to stay quiet": Eu fiquei calado a reunião inteira. (I stayed quiet for the whole meeting.)
  • A proverb: Quem cala consente. (Silence means consent.)
