Good to know

  • Engordar or emagrecer? The opposite is emagrecer (to lose weight): Eu engordei no inverno e emagreci no verão. (I gained weight in the winter and lost weight in the summer.)
  • How much: the kilos come right after the verb, with no preposition: Engordei cinco quilos. (I gained five kilos.)
  • Food can be the subject, meaning "to be fattening": Chocolate engorda. (Chocolate is fattening.)
