Good to know

  • Atirar em a person or animal means to shoot at them: O caçador atirou no pássaro. (The hunter shot at the bird.) With a thing as its object, it means to throw: Ele atirou a pedra no lago. (He threw the stone into the lake.)
  • In everyday speech, jogar is the usual word for "to throw". Atirar suggests more force.
  • O tiro is a shot: Eu ouvi um tiro. (I heard a shot.)
  • Se atirar means to throw yourself: Ele se atirou na piscina. (He threw himself into the pool.)
