Good to know

  • Derrubar or cair? Cair is to fall; derrubar is to make something fall: O copo caiu. (The glass fell.) Eu derrubei o copo. (I knocked the glass over.)
  • Big things too: derrubar uma árvore (to cut down a tree), derrubar um prédio (to tear down a building).
  • Brazilians also use derrubar for spilling a drink: Eu derrubei café na mesa. (I spilled coffee on the table.) Derramar is the more exact word for liquids.
