Good to know

  • Three everyday uses: apertar o botão (to press the button), apertar o parafuso (to tighten the screw), apertar a mão (to shake hands).
  • Clothes and shoes that are too tight apertam, and the adjective is apertado: Esta calça está apertada. (These pants are tight.)
  • Apertar o cinto is to fasten or tighten your belt, and also to cut your spending: Este mês a gente vai ter que apertar o cinto. (This month we'll have to tighten our belts.)
