Good to know

  • Afirmar que: it is more formal than dizer or falar, and very common in the news: O ministro afirmou que os preços vão cair. (The minister stated that prices are going to fall.)
  • A useful phrase: Não posso afirmar com certeza. (I can't say for sure.)
  • The opposite is negar: Ele não afirmou nem negou. (He neither confirmed nor denied it.)
  • Not for bookings: to confirm a reservation or an appointment, the verb is confirmar.
