Good to know

  • No preposition: English says "let go of", Portuguese just says Solta a minha mão! (Let go of my hand!) Me solta! means "Let me go!"
  • Common expressions: soltar pipa (to fly a kite), soltar fogos (to set off fireworks), soltar o cabelo (to let your hair down), soltar uma risada (to let out a laugh).
  • Solto is the short participle, used as an adjective and after ser and estar: O cachorro está solto. (The dog is loose.) O preso foi solto. (The prisoner was released.) After ter, use soltado: Ele tinha soltado a corda.
  • The opposites are segurar (to hold) and prender (to fasten, to arrest).
