Good to know

  • Retornar or voltar? They mean the same thing. Voltar is the everyday word; retornar sounds a bit more formal: Eu volto amanhã. (I'll be back tomorrow.)
  • Retornar a ligação is to call someone back, and in everyday talk you can drop a ligação: Já te retorno. (I'll get right back to you.)
  • Prepositions: retornar a or para a place, retornar de a place: retornar ao trabalho, retornar para casa, retornar de viagem.
  • O retorno is the return. On a road, it is also the place where you can make a U-turn: Pegue o próximo retorno. (Take the next U-turn.)
