Good to know

  • Relatar is fairly formal. You'll see it in the news, at work and at the doctor's. To tell a friend what happened, Brazilians use contar: Me conta tudo! (Tell me everything!)
  • Um relato is an account of what happened; um relatório is a written report: Preciso entregar o relatório até sexta. (I need to hand in the report by Friday.)
  • In apps and on websites, relatar um problema is "report a problem".
  • To report someone to the authorities, the verb is denunciar, not relatar.
