Good to know

  • Inibido describes a person who feels shy or self-conscious: Ela fica inibida na frente da câmera. (She gets shy in front of the camera.) The everyday words are tímido and com vergonha.
  • To deter: in the news, inibir means to discourage a behavior: A lei quer inibir o uso do celular no trânsito. (The law aims to discourage cell phone use in traffic.)
  • Inibir or proibir? Proibir is to forbid; inibir only discourages or holds back.
