Good to know

  • Paperwork: you will meet emitir with documents: emitir um passaporte (to issue a passport), emitir uma nota fiscal (to issue an invoice or receipt), emitir uma passagem (to issue a ticket), emitir um boleto (to issue a boleto, the payment slip used all over Brazil).
  • Segunda via is a replacement copy of a document or bill: Preciso emitir a segunda via da conta. (I need to issue a copy of the bill.)
  • To give off: light, sound, heat and gases: O sol emite luz. (The sun gives off light.) In formal language, emitir uma opinião is to give an opinion.
