Good to know

  • Spelling: the g becomes j before o and a, to keep the "zh" sound: eu elejo, que eles elejam.
  • Two past participles: elegido (after ter) and eleito (after ser and estar, and as an adjective). Eleito is by far the one you'll hear most: Ela foi eleita prefeita. (She was elected mayor.)
  • Election words: a eleição (the election), o eleitor (the voter), votar em (to vote for): Em quem você vai votar? (Who are you going to vote for?)
