- De castigo: in everyday speech people use the noun castigo more than the verb. Ele está de castigo. (He's grounded.) A mãe deixou o menino de castigo. (The mother grounded the boy.)
- Spelling: the g becomes gu before e: eu castiguei, não castigue.
- Sun, rain and drought can castigar too, meaning they hit hard: O sol está castigando hoje. (The sun is brutal today.)
- Castigar or punir? They mean the same; punir is more formal and is the word used for laws and crimes.
