Good to know

  • Aquecer or esquentar? Both mean "to heat". Esquentar is the more everyday word, especially for food: Vou esquentar a comida. (I'm going to heat up the food.) Aquecer is common in recipes, for heating a house and in sports.
  • O aquecimento is the warm-up before exercise, and also "heating": aquecimento global (global warming). Um aquecedor is a heater.
  • To warm yourself up, use se aquecer: Vamos nos aquecer antes de correr. (Let's warm up before running.)
  • Spelling: the c becomes ç before o and a: eu aqueço, que você aqueça.
