  • Podre means "rotten": Essa maçã está podre. (This apple is rotten.) For food that simply goes bad, the everyday verb is estragar: O leite estragou. (The milk went bad.)
  • A common expression: apodrecer na cadeia (to rot in jail).
  • Spelling: c becomes ç before o and a: apodreça, apodreçam.
