Good to know

  • Se animar is to cheer up or get excited, and se animar a + infinitive is to feel like doing something: Você se anima a ir ao cinema? (Do you feel like going to the movies?)
  • Animado means lively or excited: A festa estava animada. (The party was lively.) Estou animado para a viagem. (I'm excited about the trip.)
  • The opposite is desanimar (to lose heart, to discourage): Não desanime! (Don't lose heart!)
  • Um desenho animado is a cartoon.
