Good to know

  • Clothes: when a seamstress takes in or alters clothes so they fit, the verb is ajustar: Preciso ajustar esta calça. (I need to get these pants altered.)
  • The noun is o ajuste: fazer um ajuste (to make an adjustment).
  • Ajustar or consertar? Ajustar is a small change to something that works; consertar is to fix something broken: Ajustei o banco. (I adjusted the seat.) Consertei o banco. (I fixed the seat.)
