Good to know

  • Spelling: g becomes j before o and a to keep the "zh" sound: ajo, aja, ajam.
  • Agir or atuar? Agir is to take action or to behave in a certain way. For acting in a movie or a play, use atuar: Ela atua em novelas. (She acts in soap operas.)
  • Agir como se is followed by the past subjunctive: Ele age como se fosse rico. (He acts as if he were rich.)
  • Medicines "act" too: O remédio já agiu. (The medicine has already taken effect.)
