Good to know

  • Spelling: the u in gu is silent and is only there to keep the hard "g" before e. Before o and a it disappears: ergo, erga, ergam.
  • Erguer or levantar? Levantar is the everyday verb. Erguer is a little stronger and appears in phrases like erguer a cabeça (to hold your head up), erguer a voz (to raise your voice) and erguer a taça (to lift the trophy).
  • It also means "to build" or "to put up": erguer um muro (to put up a wall).
