  • Two directions: something gets soft, or you make it soft: A manteiga amoleceu. (The butter softened.) Amoleça a manteiga. (Soften the butter.)
  • People soften too, when they stop being angry or strict: Ele amoleceu quando viu a neta. (He softened when he saw his granddaughter.) You'll also hear amolecer o coração (to soften someone's heart).
