Good to know

  • It is the polite, gentle word for morrer (to die), like "to pass away". Use it for people, especially when giving or commenting on sad news.
  • For animals, plants and expressions, use morrer: Estou morrendo de fome. (I'm starving.)
  • Falecido means "late" or "deceased": o meu falecido avô (my late grandfather). The noun is o falecimento.
  • What to say to someone who lost a relative: Meus pêsames. (My condolences.) or Sinto muito pela sua perda. (I'm very sorry for your loss.)
