Good to know

  • Cair bem means to suit someone or look good on them. With food, it means "to go down well": Esse vestido caiu muito bem em você. (That dress looks great on you.) Uma sopa agora cairia bem. (Some soup would go down well right now.)
  • Caiu a ficha means "it finally sank in". It comes from old pay phones, where the token (ficha) had to drop before the call went through: Só agora caiu a ficha. (It only just sank in.)
  • When things stop working: A ligação caiu. (The call dropped.) A internet caiu. (The internet went down.)
  • Accents: caí, caía and caíram have an accent because the i is stressed and is a syllable of its own: ca-í. Without the accent, cai is one syllable.
