Good to know

  • What you can inverter: an order, positions or roles: inverter a ordem (to reverse the order), inverter os papéis (to swap roles), inverter a situação (to turn the situation around).
  • Inverter is not investir. Investir means "to invest": investir dinheiro (to invest money).
  • To turn an object upside down, Brazilians usually say virar: Vire o copo de cabeça para baixo. (Turn the glass upside down.)
  • The related noun is o inverso (the opposite): Foi o inverso do que eu esperava. (It was the opposite of what I expected.)
