Good to know

  • Find or meet: encontrar means both: Encontrei minhas chaves! (I found my keys!) / Encontrei o Pedro no mercado. (I ran into Pedro at the supermarket.)
  • Meeting someone for the first time is conhecer, not encontrar: Prazer em conhecer você! (Nice to meet you!)
  • Se encontrar means "to meet up": A gente se encontra às oito? (Shall we meet at eight?) In speech you'll also hear encontrar com: Vou encontrar com ela amanhã. (I'm meeting her tomorrow.)
  • Achar also means "to find" and is very common in speech: Não acho meu celular! (I can't find my phone!)
